Abstract
Documentation of patient symptoms directly related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is primarily notated as free text within the electronic health record. This project aimed to automate the capture of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data for improving the care of patients diagnosed with COPD. The COPD Assessment Test (CAT) questionnaire was electronically deployed in beta-testing to trigger a clinical decision support feature identified as a Best Practice Advisory (BPA). This project used a quality improvement design to enhance the clinical management of adult patients diagnosed with COPD in the ambulatory setting. The DNP student used a retrospective review of the electronic health record and survey responses to evaluate this project. BPAs were useful in displaying GOLD guideline recommendations and pertinent clinical information to participants; however, pulmonary rehabilitation referrals were comparable before and after implementation.
