Abstract
Ceremony and unveiling of a commemorative plaque recognizing James (Jim) Ashburn's superconductivity discovery in Wilson Hall on January 29, 1987. Ashburn "created a tiny disk of yttirum-barium-copper oxide that conducted electricity with zero resistance when cooled with liquid nitrogen to 93 degrees Kelvin, or about 299 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, more than double the previous record" ("UAH plaque marks superconductor feat," by Martin Burkey, The Huntsville Times, Jan. 30, 1997, page B1). At the time of the discovery, Ashburn was a Ph.D. student working with physics professor M.K. Wu. Speakers include Dean of the College of Science J. Graeme Duthie, Professor Emerita Frances C. Roberts, Professor Emeritus Elmer Anderson, Jim Ashburn, and UAH Provost Samuel P. McManus.
