Abstract
The capabilities and limitations of an arc heated blowdown wind tunnel to simulate flow parameters of a re-entering ICBM are investigated theoretically. Particular numerical examples apply to the eight-megawatt tunnel of the Physical Sciences Laboratory, U. S. Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. The expected efficiency, control and response time of the rotary power supply are presented. The meaning of temperature is discussed. Calculated non-equilibrium nozzle flow parameters are presented graphically. The calculation procedure for a real gas equilibrium inviscid flow around a pointed cone is given.
