Abstract
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) who practice in inpatient facilities are subject to reimbursement guidelines that can create difficulties in billing for services. The purpose of this project was to develop a billing framework to allow for hospital-based APRNs to bill inpatient professional services. A billing framework and billing tool was developed utilizing best evidence and presented to the steering committee work group. Feedback from the work group led to revisions of the framework, billing tool and the development of a billing guideline before being accepted into a larger billing initiative to be reviewed by senior leadership. The development of a billing framework is an important first step in implementing billing for hospital-based APRNs. The groundwork has been laid for the organization to build upon the framework for a successful implementation of billing for hospital-based APRNs in the future.
