Abstract
Depressive disorders and their impactful symptoms are a global problem and the leading cause of disability worldwide. The symptoms of depressive disorders, which include fatigue, loss of interest, feelings of worthlessness, feelings of sadness, and changes in sleep and appetite, contribute to an increasing burden on economies, healthcare systems, and patients. The symptoms of depression are commonly assessed using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) as a screening tool and for treatment evaluation. The growing burden of disease for depression and its symptoms, combined with an insufficient amount of mental health resources in local communities, has created a need for new and novel treatment and management of depressive symptoms in primary care patients. A comprehensive walking program of at least 150 minutes per week at moderate intensity can reduce PHQ-9 scores and alleviate depressive symptoms. This program has been implemented through a primary care clinic in Limestone County, Alabama, for participants with PHQ-9 scores of 5-19. Icek Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior (TPB) was used in this project to achieve behavior modification goals, guiding the promotion of at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking per week, which can reduce PHQ-9 scores and mitigate depressive symptoms.
